Best Tuna Patties – Canned Tuna Fish Cakes Recipe

Tuna cakes are a great way to make a quick snack, light dinner or sides dish. This simple, easy and effortless recipe for tuna patties gets ready in just 10 minutes or less. Packed with lots of flavor from onions, garlic, parmesan, and mustard. These make a great addition to sandwiches, salads or eaten on it own.

How many of you have tuna every week? Well, we do! We have one fish lunch every week and one fish dinner every week which means we have two fish meals every week. The afternoon is usually fresh or frozen fish like the ones I shared with you Breadcrumb crusted baked fish, Cilantro baked fish or tandoori fish. The evening is usually canned tuna or salmon and smoked salmon type of dishes such as my cilantro fish cakes. Believe it or not though offseason we still make Gefilte Fish Recipe with Beet Horseradish for PassoverGefilte fish during the year. It’s my Aadis’ favorite.

My kids love canned tuna. Aadi can eat canned tuna outta the can like a cat. Rhea love spreads which I usually often make (still have to share those yummies with you).

About these tuna patties

As the family, I think these tuna patties is a big winner. I have to make a bigger batch then just 6 though. As you can see in the images – I usually make about 4 cans at a time. The leftovers I usually add to Aadi’s school box in my soft burger bun. He calls it tuna burger and loves it.

Now, this is a simple, easy and effortless recipe, and it’s a great way to have a quick light dinner, snack or meal. Yes, our dinners are as simple as tuna patties with a side salad and bread. Quick snack – I make some of these and serve them in my sandwich bread slices when the kids are back from Basketball practice. I love breaking a few tuna patties over my salad and that’s all I will have for dinner.

Let’s talk ingredients and substitutes

  • Canned tuna – You can use any brand you like. Some are fishier than others but again that’s a personal choice. I usually love tuna in olive oil. I find it’s less fishy. If I use that, I omit the olive oil in the recipe.
  • Onion and garlic – always adds so much more flavor and taste – don’t you think? Of course, you can add it raw after all it is going to cook but I love lightly saute these so it takes the raw bite out and makes it a lot more subtle in the recipe. Try it.
  • Fresh herbs – my go-to herb of choice is cilantro but when it comes to fish I love adding dill. Pairs so well with tuna or salmon.
  • Mustard – just a slight zing again you can omit it all together.
  • Parmesan – Have you noticed it’s that little nutty flavor from parmesan that takes away the fishy smell completely. It’s amazing!
  • Salt – Please taste the tuna before you add salt. Some brand has salt added.
